Questionnaire (subjective rating)

Screenshot of the HearCom screening questionnaireHearing impairment can often have a restricting effect on a person’s day-to-day activities. The HearCom screening questionnaire provides a means of assessing the subjective level of handicap experienced by a person as a result of their hearing loss. Questions will focus on four different areas:

  • Speech intelligibility in quiet (4 questions)
  • Speech intelligibility in noise (5 questions)
  • Sound localisation (4 questions)
  • Recognition of sounds (3 questions)
  • Detection of sounds (2 questions)

The outcomes of the questionnaire are given as one score in three categories, identified on the expected average hearing loss for 1, 2, and 4 kHz:

  1. ■ Green, intended to cover respondents with a hearing loss lower than 29 dB.
  2. ■ Yellow, indicating insufficient hearing covering respondents with a hearing loss between 29 and 41 dB.
  3. ■ Red, indicating a poor hearing for respondents having a hearing loss more than 41 dB.

Note: the audiograms are not actually measured with the questionnaire; the areas represent the audiograms of a test group measured to validate the questionnaire.

Note: the outcomes represent the subjective experiences of the participants. More tests will be needed to evaluate their hearing objectively.
